Get ready for an exciting baseball season with Vinnie Pasquantino, the Kansas City Royals' first baseman, who is entering a crucial spring with a newfound sense of confidence!
Pasquantino's journey to this point has been an intriguing one. He recently wrapped up contract negotiations, his first year of arbitration, which he described as a 'weird' process. But, after some back-and-forth, the Royals and Pasquantino reached an agreement, signing a two-year deal worth $11 million, with the potential to reach $15.7 million. This contract keeps him under club control until 2028.
"I'm thrilled to be here, and I'm glad we got the negotiations out of the way," Pasquantino said. "It was a unique experience, and I'm grateful for the outcome."
And here's where it gets controversial... Pasquantino's contract could be seen as a risky move by some. With a history of injuries, including right shoulder surgery and a fractured thumb, his health has been a concern. But Pasquantino is confident he's fully recovered and ready to perform.
"I'm declaring myself 100% healthy," he asserted. "I've been hitting since October because I wanted to, and I'm enjoying the game again."
The Royals are counting on Pasquantino's production. He provides protection for Bobby Witt Jr. in the batting order and offers solid defense at first base. The club has invested in keeping their young core, including Witt, Maikel Garcia, and Cole Ragans, and now Pasquantino joins that list.
"We had some great discussions," said Royals GM J.J. Picollo. "In the end, we knew Pasquantino would be a Royal, and he deserved a significant raise."
And this is the part most people miss... Pasquantino's two-year deal could lead to an even longer stay with the Royals. It gives the club the option to extend his contract further down the line, a move that could keep this talented first baseman in Kansas City for years to come.
Pasquantino will lead a revamped Royals offense this season. The club has added outfielders Lane Thomas and Isaac Collins, and young stars Jac Caglianone and Carter Jensen are expected to step up.
"We've been working hard this offseason," Pasquantino said. "I'm in the best shape of my life, and I'm ready to showcase my skills."
But there's a twist! Pasquantino will be representing Italy in the World Baseball Classic this spring. This means a fast start to his season, as he'll be jumping into live action quickly.
"It's going to be a weird spring with the WBC," he acknowledged. "But it's a great opportunity for some of our guys to impress the big-league coaches."
The Royals' first full-squad workout is scheduled for February 16th in Surprise, Arizona. Pasquantino will then join Team Italy at the end of February, with the 2026 World Baseball Classic kicking off on March 4th.
