Philly's sports scene is about to get a major boost, and it's all thanks to the dedicated efforts of The Stoop Pigeon and other passionate advocates for women's sports. This summer, the city is gearing up for an exciting lineup of women's sporting events, and The Stoop Pigeon is determined to be at the forefront of this movement.
A Summer of Women's Sports
The Stoop Pigeon, a women's sports hub and cafe, has been instrumental in fostering a vibrant community for women's sports enthusiasts in Philly. Starting as a monthly WNBA watch party, the organization has grown exponentially, becoming one of the city's largest dedicated fan communities. Jen Leary, the founder, has been approached by numerous local and national organizations seeking to engage with this passionate fan base.
Building a Community
The Stoop Pigeon's recent double-watch party at Dock Street Brewing in South Philly is a perfect example of their community-building efforts. By partnering with United States Tennis Associate Middle States and Hoopbus, a charitable organization focused on basketball's transformative power, they created an event that combined tennis and basketball, offering attendees the chance to play red ball tennis, win prizes, and shoot hoops. This collaboration showcases the power of partnerships in promoting women's sports and creating engaging experiences for fans.
A Team Effort
Leary emphasizes that The Stoop Pigeon's success is not solely their own. She believes that promoting women's sports in Philly is a collective effort, and partnering with other local organizations is crucial. "The one thing that women's sports around the world does is we lift each other up and work together. Progress in numbers," she says. This collaborative approach is a key factor in the growth and success of women's sports in the city.
Looking Ahead
With a new location on Broad Street planned for mid-fall, The Stoop Pigeon is committed to keeping the momentum going. Philly's upcoming schedule of women's sports events, including professional lacrosse, tennis, and squash, is a testament to the city's growing reputation as a hub for women's sports. Leary believes that the hard work put in by The Stoop Pigeon and other organizations has played a significant role in attracting these events to Philly.
However, Leary acknowledges that landing the event is just the first step. The real challenge is getting people to attend and show their support. "The goal is to get people there, to show the WTA and other women's sports leagues that Philly is a women's sports town. We want to pack the stadiums like we did with Unrivaled, even if you don't know the sport!"
A Brighter Future
The Stoop Pigeon's efforts are not just about the present; they are about building a sustainable future for women's sports in Philly. By creating a dedicated community and fostering a culture of support, they are ensuring that women's sports continue to thrive and grow. As Philly gears up for an exciting summer of women's sports, The Stoop Pigeon's impact will undoubtedly be felt, and their legacy will continue to inspire and empower.
