"I had heart palpitations and my chest felt tight. It was a shock because I'd never been told my kidney disease put me at risk of cardiovascular problems," Lee shared. This lack of awareness and support is a concern for both Lee and Kacey, who now worry about their own heart health after years of illness.

On July 7th, the government unveiled a new cardiovascular disease strategy, recognizing the link between heart disease, high blood pressure, and kidney disease. The strategy aims to expand targeted testing to identify undiagnosed chronic kidney disease. This is a step in the right direction, according to Sir Stephen Powis, a trustee of Kidney Research UK and former medical director of NHS England.
"This strategy has the potential to save thousands of kidney patients' lives," Sir Stephen said. "But it is now crucial that GPs are properly resourced and supported to deliver these vital changes, including improved access to life-saving treatments."
