In Iran, the call for a transparent and independent investigation into the death toll during the recent protests is growing louder. The government's announcement of overseeing the publication of deceased names has sparked both hope and skepticism among the Iranian people. While the official death toll stands at 3,117, including security forces, many believe the true number could be as high as 30,000. This discrepancy has led to calls for a more transparent process, with some suggesting a dedicated website to verify and share information about the deceased. However, the proposed government identification process has been met with criticism from reformists, who argue it lacks sufficient transparency. Mohsen Borhani, a law professor and critic of the Iranian government, sees this as a positive step, but emphasizes the need for a more open and accessible platform for citizens to share information. The fear of retribution for families willing to identify fatalities, especially if they believe their loved ones were killed by security forces, adds another layer of complexity. The Tehran teachers' union has issued a stark statement, demanding the release of all detainees and highlighting the bloodshed, which they claim has affected tens of thousands of children, women, and men. Ahmad Zeidabadi, a reformist analyst, points to the deep distrust between the state and society, suggesting that many no longer accept official data. He proposes a fact-finding team from the United Nations as the best solution to restore faith in the official figures. The Reform Front, an alliance of reformist groups, has also called for an independent committee to investigate the tragedy and provide a transparent report. The former president, Hassan Rouhani, has emphasized the need for political change, including the formation of political parties and an end to the filtering of electoral candidates. Meanwhile, an unofficial committee is working to identify those still in detention, as security services continue their sweeps through the country. The focus on children under 18 being held is particularly poignant, with teaching union websites publishing their photographs. The legal implications are also significant, with lawyers noting that the majority of those arrested are young breadwinners, facing initial sentences of two to five years. The financial burden of bail further exacerbates the situation, as many from working-class families cannot afford it. This complex web of events and emotions has left many Iranians questioning the official narrative, and demanding a more transparent and independent investigation into the death toll.
