The Enniskillen Lakelanders Swimming Club has wrapped up an extraordinary season with two back-to-back events that showcased the talent and dedication of its swimmers, as well as the unwavering support of their families, coaches, and volunteers. This season has been a testament to the club's resilience and the power of community-driven sports initiatives.
One of the highlights was the annual End of Season Gala, a grand finale that celebrated the swimmers' progress and the club's first full year at the Omagh Leisure Centre. The gala was a spectacle of athletic prowess, with swimmers from all training groups, from beginners to national championship contenders, coming together to compete. The event was a testament to the club's inclusivity and the joy of swimming, as parents and supporters cheered on their young athletes.
What made this gala particularly special was the 'Mother of all Relays', a relay event that brought together 60 swimmers and parents for a thrilling five-minute contest. Coach Chelsey Weir's team emerged victorious, capping off a season of hard work and dedication. The relay was a true community affair, with families and friends coming together to support their swimmers, and it served as a powerful reminder of the club's spirit and camaraderie.
But the celebrations didn't stop there. Earlier in the week, the club organized an afternoon of activities at Blue Green Yonder on Castle Island, offering a fun-filled break from the rigors of training. Paddleboarding, archery, jetty jumping, and a family barbecue provided a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, allowing swimmers to unwind and recharge before the season's final push.
The annual prize-giving ceremony was another emotional high point, recognizing the achievements of individual swimmers and the contributions of coaches and volunteers. Mollie Kate Brewster and Charlie Brewster were named Group A Cup winners, while Elin O'Donohue, Poppy Brownlee, and Jakub Mikiewicz Lumayad took home the Group B Cup. Ella Neal and Darragh Collins were honored in Group C, and Sophie Hanna and Ryan Mongan were recognized in Group D. The introduction of a second Coaches' Cup, sponsored by Gavin and Siobhan O'Hare, further emphasized the club's commitment to recognizing the efforts of its coaches.
The Girls' Coaches' Award went to Holly Barkley, who demonstrated remarkable dedication and improvement in competition, while the Boys' Coaches' Award was presented to Conal Walker for his outstanding season, which included several national qualifying times. Sarah Speer was awarded the Committee Cup for her unwavering commitment to coaching and supporting the club, even as she stepped away from competitive swimming.
The club also took the time to recognize swimmers completing their first year in Omagh, alongside senior swimmers who received certificates and Volunteer Now awards for their contributions to club life. This recognition was a powerful reminder of the club's values and the importance of community engagement.
Just one day after the prize-giving ceremony, the Lakelanders traveled to Lisburn for the Swim Ulster Swim Festival 2026, where they delivered an exceptional set of results against strong provincial competition. The festival introduced a new mixed-age 300m relay, and the Lakelanders made an immediate impact by entering three teams. One of these teams secured an excellent bronze medal, with Charlie Brewster, Emily Irvine, Elin O'Donohue, James McSorley, Anton Neal, and Holly Barkley combining for a superb third-place finish.
Among the standout performers was Holly Barkley, who had a remarkable day in the pool, winning one gold, four silver, and one bronze medal. Her performances included a huge six-second personal best in the 50m butterfly, while she also claimed gold in the 100m breaststroke. Anna May Hill impressed with her gold in the 200m freestyle and four bronze medals, while Emily Irvine continued her excellent season with two bronze medals, including a podium finish in the 100m backstroke after achieving a personal best.
James McSorley produced another strong display, winning silver in both the 100m individual medley and 100m freestyle, while Anton Neal collected four medals, including gold in both the 100m and 200m breaststroke. Haralds Uzulins enjoyed a particularly successful competition, winning gold in both the 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke, alongside silver in the 100m breaststroke after slicing more than three seconds from his personal best. Finley Walker-Leonard also impressed with three second-place finishes in the 200m backstroke, 200m individual medley, and 100m butterfly.
Several younger swimmers gained valuable competition experience, with many recording personal bests in their first away gala appearances. Club PRO Janette Mongan praised the swimmers for their dedication and commitment throughout the season, emphasizing that their achievements reflected months of hard work and sacrifice.
'These performances are the result of months of hard work, dedication, and commitment to training,' she said. 'The medals our swimmers have achieved for the Lakelanders are fantastic and are a fitting reward for all of their efforts.'
Mongan added that the club could not be prouder of how the swimmers had represented Enniskillen and Fermanagh over the course of the year. With six Lakelanders now qualified for this summer's Irish National Championships in Limerick and Dublin, the season is not yet fully over for the club's top competitors. However, for the entire Lakelanders community, the final weeks of the season have underlined the strength, resilience, and spirit that define the club.
As Mongan summed up, 'They are wonderful ambassadors for Enniskillen and Fermanagh, and we couldn't be prouder of how they have represented the club throughout the season.' This season has been a testament to the power of community sports, where dedication, hard work, and support from families and volunteers converge to create memorable moments and lasting achievements.
