Australia's Women's Cricket Team: New Leadership, New Era (2026)

A New Era for Australian Cricket: McGrath Welcomes Change

Australia's T20 International squad is set to assemble in Sydney this week, gearing up for their inaugural match against India this Sunday. Tahlia McGrath has expressed her enthusiasm for the fresh leadership dynamic as the team prepares to face off against the newly crowned world champions in a highly anticipated multi-format series.

Following the retirement of Alyssa Healy, McGrath will continue her role as vice-captain, now joined by Ashleigh Gardner as co-deputy under the guidance of new captain Sophie Molineux. This trio will face their first test together in the upcoming three T20 matches against India, starting at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday. This series serves as a critical evaluation of Australia's performance in the 20-over format, especially in a year leading up to the World Cup.

McGrath, who was one of the three candidates considered to take over Healy's captaincy, stated that while she had hoped for the full-time role, she is wholeheartedly supportive of Molineux’s leadership. "I've had the privilege of captaining my country 15 times, and I have cherished every moment of that experience. I did put my name forward for the permanent position, but now I’m excited for Soph and looking forward to supporting her in any way possible," McGrath shared. She emphasized her eagerness to work alongside both Molineux and Gardner, hoping to lead Australia to more victories and trophies in the near future.

"We've shown some excellent cricket recently and with significant tournaments on the horizon, I believe Soph will excel in her role. I'm here to assist her however I can," McGrath added.

Sunday’s T20 match will mark Australia’s first international appearance since their loss to India in the ODI World Cup semi-final last October and their first venture into the T20 format since March of the previous year. McGrath anticipates a tough challenge from Harmanpreet Kaur's side, who have already arrived in Sydney and begun their training ahead of a warm-up match against the Governor-General's XI at North Sydney Oval this Friday evening.

"Multi-format series really test a team's capabilities across all formats," McGrath remarked. "India is an elite team, and they come into this series with great momentum from the World Cup. This is our first chance to come together as a squad after some time, and it's our only series at home this summer. We are all eagerly awaiting it, and I expect we’ll witness some top-notch cricket."

In recent months, McGrath has faced challenges with both bat and ball during 2025, both in international play and within the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). However, she finds renewed confidence from her recent domestic performances, having played several 50-over matches for South Australia this year. Last week, the all-rounder scored 58 and remained not out with 43 in consecutive victories against Victoria, and she also took 3 wickets for 48 runs. In January, she contributed a solid 47 runs against Western Australia.

"It felt great to return to playing for South Australia, securing some wins, and personally contributing to the team's success. It was fantastic preparation for me," McGrath noted with satisfaction.
