Bold take: Giannis Antetokounmpo returns to the floor, and the Bucks still face a tough night. At Fiserv Forum on Monday, Milwaukee fell 108-81 to the Boston Celtics, even with Antetokounmpo back in action.
In roughly 25 minutes, he posted 19 points and 11 rebounds, though he remains under a minutes cap after missing 15 games with a calf injury.
“I feel like I’ve been playing at a deficit all year,” Antetokounmpo said. “This is the first time I’ve felt like I have a little something left in the tank, that I’m not risking anything. I’m glad to be here. I’m just trying to get back into rhythm. Not playing for six weeks, and today was only the second time I’ve actually played against contact. The more in shape I am, the better I’ll be able to help my team, and I’ll be more vocal.”
For the most part, he indicated he liked what he saw from the Bucks while he was sidelined.
“Overall, I think the team has been in a good groove,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what we did in the second half of Chicago or tonight’s game—we’ve got to get back to competing. We need to move the ball, create the best shot, and give the next guy an advantage.”
Milwaukee has long talked about championship aspirations, but this year the goal is shifting toward securing a play-in spot for the playoffs.
The lopsided loss to a Celtics squad that played without Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum offered another humbling reminder.
“It’s a struggle,” Antetokounmpo admitted. “I believe the team performs best when everyone is connected and aligned toward the same objective. Right now, I’m simply grateful to be out there.”
He also acknowledged the challenge of fitting in amid recent Bucks acquisitions, describing it as a strange process of finding his role within the group.
